One Body, A Thousand Eyes:
Body Image and the Teenager

Abstract

According to a 2020 study done by researchers at the National Library of Medicine, 70 percent of middle and high school students revealed that they struggled with some sort of eating disorder tendency, whether it be vomiting on purpose, starving themselves, or taking diet pills. That number is too high and seems to be growing in our current generation of young people. The issues of eating disorders and body dysmorphia are simply not talked about enough and need to be addressed more often in an intentional and purposeful way by parents, teachers, and other adult mentors in a young person’s life. More attention is required from everyone, especially when it comes to men having to deal with these issues of body dysmorphia and eating disorders. It’s not just an issue for females; anyone can be prone to suffering from this problem, so we as a society need to wake up and pay more attention to eating disorders and body dysmorphia.
